“Allos”

Lac d'Allos is an incredible place, it is the largest natural high altitude lake in Europe (about 2200 m altitude). I went there the very last weekend of October 2014 when I was in illustration residency in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence.The weather was very nice but very cold, in the morning the ground was all frosted and gave an ashy color to the mountain pastures. The grass was all burnt from the past summer and the larches were bright orange. It was this atmosphere that I drew on the spot, then I tried to transcribe it into cut paper when I returned to my studio. I like working with painted paper cut-outs because it helps me to synthesise the look, it's a work of composition, you have to make choices, let certain shapes cohabit and discover all the richness to which the cut-out gives rise: accidents, scraps of paper, counter-forms... For me, this technique is a real space of freedom.
